Today we commemorate the 2-year anniversary of the November 9th, 2020, Mai-Kadra massacre which claimed the lives of at least 1,515 ethnic Amhara civilians (1,700 by some estimates) in Mai-Kadra town (also transliterated May-Cadra). This was the single worst civilian massacre of the war in Northern Ethiopia and 2 years later, victims have yet to receive justice or restitution.
Last year, AAA published a special investigative report and accompanying documentary detailing the horrific massacre directly from survivors. The Mai-Kadra massacre is just one of many large-scale massacres perpetrated by the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) in the 2-year war in Northern Ethiopia. Further, it is just one chapter in the wider Amhara Genocide perpetrated by the TPLF over the decades-long occupation of Welkait and Raya – ancestral Amhara lands which were annexed to the Tigray Regional State from the historic Gonder and Wollo Provinces, respectively (modern-day Amhara Regional State).
Over the course of the war, Mai-Kadra was liberated by allied Ethiopian forces however, survivors of the massacre live with the pain, trauma and sorrow of that painful day. We extend our condolences to all the Amhara households who lost loved ones in Mai-Kadra and in other corners of Ethiopia over the course of the war and otherwise. We will always remember the victims of the Mai-Kadra Massacre and all of TPLF’s victims in every corner of Ethiopia.
