80 year old Tefere Demile of Tegede in Welkeit can tell you where members of the Welkeit-Tegede community tortured and murdered by the TPLF are buried, because he was forced to bury them. And now he is leading investigators to these graves to help the community have closure.

The town of Adi Selam was adjacent to a torture camp run by the TPLF called Ghehenab or “Hell”. The camp contained man-made cells along with multiple caves and natural formations that served as cells where members of the Welkait-Tegede community were imprisoned and murdered because of their ethnicity. The camp began operating 32 years ago in 1990 when the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) occupied Welkait as they fought against the Derg Regime before gaining control of the area in 1991. Welkait was Amhara land for as much as 1000 years prior to 1991 when the region was annexed and incorporated into Tigray by the TPLF.
